Approaching Collapse, Just Collapse and the Reassuring Sanity of Understanding Our Predicament.

Image
It's been a little over 4 years since I first came into contact with Tristan and Kate through their academic Collapsology work on Just Collapse. That was a time when we could consider that we might transition to a post-collapse world without oil.  Approaching Collapse Forum "Life after oil will be like life before oil".  " Those were the days my friend " (Mary Hopkin). Did we really think we could survive a climate extinction event? Maybe, until the data changed. There's a Chinese Curse: "May you live in interesting times", and we do indeed. Tristan, and a few others I could mention, were, early on, labelled as Doomers and villified by Prof Michael Mann. Who then, through his mantra Doomism = Inaction,  spawned a whole band of self-styled climate educator grifters. We observed downward punching by some academics towards anyone who disagreed with their constant messages of hope and optimism for the future. Now we live in a Train wreck. Acceptance of...

Current State Of The Global Climate

The current annual global average temperature is about 1.45-1.55°C above pre-industrial  levels (1850-1900), according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and other reports for the year 2024 . This makes 2024 the warmest year on record, a trend driven by long-term climate change, which is further influenced by natural factors like the El Niño event that has now passed . 2024 was the w armest year. October 2025 has broken all records. 2024's  record warmth was caused by a combination of long-term warming from greenhouse gases and the influence of a strong El Niño event. While the El Niño is waning and La Niña conditions may return, leading to cooler conditions in the tropical Pacific, the overall trend of warming from greenhouse gases is expected to continue. Water Management. Differentiating Between Drinking Water & Other water.

Image
This quote is taken from the XReadiness Climate Adaptation document under section 5- Water Security and Sustainable Hydration. This section is good but lacks advanced knowledge. It deals with personal water management. But what happens when the community needs help? Scalable water purification is a different discipline. The XReadiness document lacks scalability. "Never assume water is safe. Contamination can be invisible and deadly, especially after flooding  or infrastructure damage. Boiling water for at least one minute kills most bacteria, viruses, and parasites. This remains the gold standard for disinfection. Portable filters (e.g. ceramic or carbon-based) and purification tablets (chlorine or iodine) are essential for mobility or evacuation. DIY methods like sand/charcoal filtering or solar  disinfection (SODIS) can be used in extended emergencies. The first method should be learned  in advance and consists of a plastic bottle containing separate layers of sand, ch...

Plan Ahead for Sanitation Failure, Further Analysis of the XReadiness document

See my post on Dry Sanitation This quote is taken from the  XReadiness Climate Adaptation document under section 4 "Stock wet wipes, disinfectants, and trash bags for short-term sanitation. Create emergency toilet systems using buckets, composting setups, or dig pits well away from water sources. Wash hands before eating or preparing food, even if using minimal water; alcohol gel or ash can help if soap is unavailable." Climate driven civilisation collapse is a slow-burn long-term problem, that needs to be planned for now.  The new normal is that after each disaster things aren't returning to how they were. Nothing is going back to normal. This is what a slow decline looks like. Analysis " Stock wet wipes, disinfectants, and trash bags for short-term sanitation. Create emergency toilet systems using buckets, composting setups, or dig pits well away from water sources." . Wet wipes are not biodegradable. I have a garden the size of an alotment & can store 2,...

Dry Sanitation. What Happens When The Sewage & Waste Infrastructure Fails

Image
It will be deep into the collapse of our society when the national wastewater and sewage infrastructure collapses. But localised flooding could cause system failures in localised areas. This dry sanitation solution works if you are off-grid. But most importantly can only be implemented if your home is well above any flood risk zone. Don't build a compost toilet where it can get flooded. You may become liable for contaminating the floodwater.  Composting toilets are the safest solution for disposing of your faeces, and your pets' faeces. The above compost toilets are a rotating 4-cubicle set on a 2.5x 3.5m footprint containing a 5cm³ box of humanure, cooked food and kitchen waste. The composting box includes rat-proofing. Compost toilets are the solution to a sanitation crisis.  YouTube link. 30 parts carbon to 1 part nitrogen to make compost. I haven't seen a single #prepper video about compost toilets. I'm guessing when SHTF, pun intended, they will be shit...

To Understand Global Climate Risk You Need To Understand How Things Are Changing- Wet Bulb Temperatures.

XReadiness For Climate Adaptation: Analysis

Image
Extinction Rebellion has just released a document /booklet about preparing for climate change adaptation. My initial overview is that they covered a lot, but not in enough detail, and ignored how the preparedness movement has evolved beyond older approaches and trends among "preppers". Let's be honest about this: This is lefty prepping. This is a comprehensive document, but it needs a lot more work. It lacks the detail required to make it a little more than a framework. Some of the advice is very limited in its scope, more because of the limitations of the Author (s). The opening section talks about "Go-Bags", which is from the age-old "Bugging-out" fantasy when disaster strikes. You have a bag ready and you run for the high ground and live out of what is in the bag for a few days. This assumes you have a chosen location to do that and can assume that 100s of other people aren't going to do that too in the same location! The bugging out myth has be...

Wet Bulb Temperatures

Image
What are Wet Bulb Temperatures? Wet bulb temperature  measures the combined effect of heat and humidity, representing the lowest temperature achievable by evaporating water into the air .  It is measured using a thermometer with a water-soaked cloth over its bulb, and it always reads lower than or equal to the dry bulb temperature. A higher wet bulb temperature indicates higher humidity, which hinders evaporation and reduces the body's ability to cool itself through sweating. This makes it a critical metric for assessing heat stress on humans and is often higher than the commonly reported heat index. Why Wet Bulb Temperatures are important Humidity and Evaporation :  The wet bulb temperature is essentially a measure of how well water can evaporate into the air. Human Cooling : Our bodies cool through the evaporation of sweat. High wet bulb temperatures mean less evaporation, making it harder to cool down and leading to dangerous heat stress.   Heat Str...

Collapse Adaptation: This Needs A National Emergency Approach.

Image
This Blog specifically addresses preparing for the climate emergency and its impacts. It is aimed at individuals, homeowners and families. It examines our existential risk from the climate emergency and suggests that developing a deep nature connection is a way to help cope with climate anxiety. To survive collapse, if that is even possible, we need community, we need each other & we need to get over our belief that we need to be exclusive. White supremacy is perpetuated by the super-rich oligarchs and Far-Right grifters, the ones who moan about being raided and arrested for harassing people or sharing ideas which induce riots based on disinformation. The Far-right are betraying the working classes into supporting people who are living lives of luxury, dodging UK taxes and squandering their donations on drugs, designer clothes & luxury holidays. This blog does not tolerate Reform ideas, racism, abuse, conspiracy theories, climate denial or anyone wanting to dispute man-made cli...

Laying The Foundations For A Future We Would Be Proud To Leave Behind

Science suggests otherwise. "Consistent analysis of temperature over the full Cenozoic era—including ‘slow’ feedbacks by ice sheets and trace gases—supports this sensitivity and implies that CO 2  was 300–350 ppm in the Pliocene and about 450 ppm at transition to a nearly ice-free planet, exposing unrealistic lethargy of ice sheet models. Equilibrium global warming for today’s GHG amount is 10°C, which is reduced to 8°C by today’s human-made aerosols" Source Proff. James E Hansen, NASA Jet Propulsion Lab. Oxford University Press https://academic.oup.com/oocc/article/3/1/kgad008/7335889 Imagining a different out come to the climate emergency is denial, lazy and it is not possible to manifest this through ritual and thought.

Connecting To The Land And Acceptance That We No Longer Have Agency To Change The Course of Climate Change

Image
The English landscape is ancient and I think this ancient landscape is deeply misunderstood by many people who talk about connection to the land. The megaliths in the English landscape are a distraction. They are mostly out-of-date communal calendars, not unlike the more portable astrolabe or tombs. They are interesting, but the living ancient landscape is where we can best learn the connection to nature and the land in a meaningful and deeply fulfilling way. Natural historic features in the English Landscape tell a story of missing people. The hedges and woodlands which once supported the livelihoods of whole communities of woodcutters, coppicers, bodegers, hudlers, charcoal makers and many more trades related to coppicing. The story of where most of these skilled men went is sad and it has resulted in the decline of ancient woodlands on a massive scale. Coppice on large estates is largely neglected, regarded as not economically viable for management. The self-styled "stewards of...

Can Modern Shamanic Practitioners Lead Us Into Deep Connection With Nature Or Are They Just On A Grift?

Image
This is Jungle Svonni, he is an indigenous Sami Shaman from Satmi. Satmi is a region in the extreme north of Europe and Russia, part of which is inside the Arctic Circle. Satmi spans Northern Russia, Finland, Sweden and Norway. The Sami people's language, singing traditions, culture, and dress have been at times banned, and like North American indigenous people, they were, in the 19th  & 20th centuries, forced to go to boarding schools as part of Nordic assimilation policies. Jungle Svonni spent several years alone in nature, living off the land. In his own words, he explains that this is how you find nature connection. Link: YouTube short, Jungle Svonni explains how he spent years in the wilderness, living off the land. This, he explains, is where we find nature connection. And I have to say I agree with him. The starting point for the Indigenous Shaman has always been nature. By the time precolonial indigenous people were 18-25, they would have mastered the neces...
