Plan Ahead for Sanitation Failure, Further Analysis of the XReadiness document
See my post on Dry Sanitation
This quote is taken from the XReadiness Climate Adaptation document under section 4
"Stock wet wipes, disinfectants, and trash bags for short-term sanitation. Create emergency toilet systems using buckets, composting setups, or dig pits well away from water sources.
Wash hands before eating or preparing food, even if using minimal water; alcohol gel or ash can help if soap is unavailable."
Climate driven civilisation collapse is a slow-burn long-term problem, that needs to be planned for now.
The new normal is that after each disaster things aren't returning to how they were. Nothing is going back to normal. This is what a slow decline looks like.

.
Wet wipes are not biodegradable. I have a garden the size of an alotment & can store 2,200ltr of rainwater & I have camping solar shower unit. Solutions that are low impact and sustainable using local resources are a better option.
There is nothing wrong with storing 5 ltrs of Milton, and knowing how to make more, safely.
Building a compost toilet ahead of time, means you dont have to overhandle human waste, reducing cross contamination and risk of disease significantly.
Only bury poo if you are on the move and need to go.
Theres no such thing as short term sanitation without risk of contmination.

"Wash hands before eating or preparing food"
No one should need to be told this.
Use Alcohol gel with caution. Itbis inneffective against some pathogens and dies not work on dirt.
Alcohol gel (hand sanitizer) is no good against several types of germs and substances, most notably the norovirus (stomach flu), certain bacteria like Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) spores.
Clostridioides difficile is a bacteria that normally inhabits the gut, it can cause severe diarrhea and inflamation of the gut. It spreads through poor hygiene via spores in fecal matter, contaminated surfaces and hands.
Hand washing with soap and water is the most effective cleaner. Liquid soap can be made from Ivy or horse chestnuts.

We can plan for some Climate events, and some cannot be planned for. Hurricane Helene's trail of devastation through North Carolina is not something you can prepare or plan for other than through skills acquisition and developing mindfulness, acceptance and resilience. If you survive, you are lucky.
I fear the time when we look at the dead with envy.
