The myths of the lone survivor are nonsense. But the trope of tin can stacking & gear hoarding is true. There is a dark side to prepping, too. It seems it is a fantastic opportunity for a grift, especially if talking to an audience who shares a similar viewpoint. YouTubers perpetuating the MAGAnazi propaganda, small boat panic and declaring they have voted Reform are not exactly attractive to anyone else wanting to learn skills.
"Oh, look, there's a blackberry, which is not exactly inspirational foraging". Few Prepper channels will talk about climate preparedness in any great detail for fear of losing their supporters and followers. In fact, climate denial is rife. Some preppers will tell you Climate Change is BS. Some have spent in excess of £8000 on their niche consumption obsession.
Dr Gail Bradbrook, in talking with Phoenix Rainbow 🌈 Climate Emergency Network, was identifying that we need to be fighting the far-right while organising around collapse. There is already a framework for doing this, and it is already proving successful in Germany, supporting people through mutual aid and changing the face of prepping from the stereotype of the far-right, foil-hat conspiracy-driven bunker broadcaster. Some UK prepper channels on YouTube are somewhere on that spectrum, but not all. But most are there to sell you stuff.
What Dr Gail Bradbrook fails to do, and this is important, is reinforce the "we are all crew in Collapse" because if we were all crew during the initial XR warm-up, as she describes it. In her conversation with Phoenix, then the same must follow now, but that's a whole different set of skills compared to campaigning.
Outdoor wilderness survival skills, coupled with indigenous knowledge of conservation, climate resilient foods, Famine Garening, mutual aid, inclusivity and #solidarityprepping: #soliprepping is how we organise for #collapse, because part of the framework and experience is already there in Germany, where there are discussion groups and conferences.
This isn't about getting people to do what we want them to do. It's about informing people about the immediate risks we face, ideas for how to manage and cope, teaching skills for collapse, and how to self-care in nature for anxiety using medically proven, peer-reviewed methods.
Creating tropes about survivalism and skills which have clearly been used with great success in Berlin during a long cold weather power outage. Marginalises the Ukrainian refugees, helping the community which welcomed them, and other people in the UK, with survival skills, struggling with a far-right-dominated narrative.
"In a move that surprised residents, members of the city's Ukrainian community quickly organised assistance for those affected.
"According to the publication, Ukrainian refugees opened an improvised "point of invincibility" for residents of the district in the premises of the Ukrainian-German centre AdlerA e.V., which operates in the Steglitz–Zehlendorf district. The centre's building was connected to another power supply line, so electricity was preserved there."
"The initiator of the assistance was Oksana Orel, a representative of the Ukrainian community in the committee on migration and integration at the district administration. Together with her daughter, she moved to Berlin after the start of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation. Oksana, together with other Ukrainian refugees, founded the Ukrainian-German centre AdlerA e.V., which helps migrants from Ukraine adapt."
"We also have people who live in apartment buildings. They have electric stoves and electric water heaters. In fact, they can't even make hot tea at home. We said they can bring thermoses and boiling water home," says Oksana.
It's week 1 after a multi-day sabotage-induced blackout in parts of the German capital, and suddenly it feels as though everyone is talking about prepping. The Guardian quotes a retired nurse in an article about Berlin's reactions to the blackout with these words: "'It turns out (my husband) has been doing his own prepping. Everyone in Germany is doing it these days. And why wouldn't you? The difference to just a short while ago is that most readily admit it now without fear of ridicule."
"Everyone's talking about prepping
Everyone is doing it, and most … admit it not without fear of ridicule. I wrote in June that "we've ... managed in recent months to finally wrench the concept of 'prepping' from the stranglehold of that incredibly unproductive framing whereby you must be a right-wing crazy person if you're thinking about practically preparing yourself for catastrophes and system collapses." But since the blackout, the debate about catastrophe preparation has really arrived in the mainstream, and it was probably to be expected that the trigger would be a severe catastrophe that deeply encroached upon the everyday normality of people who are, on a global scale, rather spoilt for stability, one that for several days demonstrated this simple truth: regardless of which major catastrophe hits us, we're probably not adequately prepared for it, and a lack of preparation for catastrophes means concrete suffering. (This statement holds true on average at every level, from the state level right down to the individual one.)"
#solidarityprepping transforming communities into cohesive cooperation in a crisis, keeping out the far right. This could take ideas like transition towns to the next level.
However, as I have already said, there is a dark side to prepping.
"Despite the resilience framework promoting a whole of society approach, preparedness inevitably develops into a scenario of haves and have-nots (meaning, those with the spare cash, space and time to prepare, and those who do not). This lays the foundations for inequality, resentment and the erosion of communal ties."
The same is true of those who have land and those who don't. There is an opportunity to adopt a truly decentralised ungated anarchy of shared values through a # tag.
#solidarityprepping is #mutualaid in any #community #inclusive #PreppingTogether #antifascist #refugeeswelcome and most importantly #skills-based and skills-shared. Everyone is crew during collapse. The people who build stuff are here to teach you, not solve your problems.
Extinction Rebellion has just released a document /booklet about preparing for climate change adaptation. My initial overview is that they covered a lot, but not in enough detail, and ignored how the preparedness movement has evolved beyond older approaches and trends among "preppers". Let's be honest about this: This is lefty prepping. This is a comprehensive document, but it needs a lot more work. It lacks the detail required to make it a little more than a framework. Some of the advice is very limited in its scope, more because of the limitations of the Author (s). The opening section talks about "Go-Bags", which is from the age-old "Bugging-out" fantasy when disaster strikes. You have a bag ready and you run for the high ground and live out of what is in the bag for a few days. This assumes you have a chosen location to do that and can assume that 100s of other people aren't going to do that too in the same location! The bugging out myth has be...

First Published December 22nd 2025 Edited January 17th 2026 What We Are Getting Wrong With Collapse Adaptation We are underestimating the combination of events we are already experiencing Severe Heat, combined with Wet Bulb Temperatures, can damage some plants, kill wildlife, and harm humans. Slow climate-driven failure of agriculture to provide the staples we need to survive: Wheat, barley and rye crop failures. We are already in a slow collapse Rice is already becoming toxic: "Rising global atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) concentrations and surface temperatures could negatively affect rice yields and nutritional quality ; however, their effects on arsenic accumulation in paddy rice have not been assessed concurrently. We aimed to assess the impact of increases in CO 2 and temperature (individually and in combination) on arsenic concentrations in rice, characterise soil properties that might influence arsenic uptake, and model the associated risks of cancer a...
