Household Adaptations For Climate Change- Setting the Gold Standard for Resilience
Specifically, UK Problems Based On What Has Already Happened.
Adapting to Climate Risk
Heatwaves & Wet Bulb events
Wet bulb adaptation requires knowledge & an understanding that these are the killer temperature/humidity combinations and we should avoid being out in them. We should also be aware of how microclimates trap heat and moisture and can therefore be warmer than the forecast temperatures, which is why carrying a personal thermometer/ hygrometer or WBT combined unit with a built-in Wet Bulb Table calculator with a data logger is recommended.
Technology for #Lifehouses during Heatwaves and Wet Bulb Events? Directly running Peltier cool air blowers from Photovoltaics into well-insulated spaces to create "cool off" zones. Thermometers with data logging and Bluetooth connectivity with an app, such as the Inkbird, allow heat /humidity tracking in real time.
If you are camping/ outdoors during a wet bulb event STAY OUT OF THE SUN, SEEK DENSE SHADE OR COOL WATER. Tomb-Stoning into cold rivers, however, is not advised. Access to cold water is essential for cooling your body. Saturate the clothes you are wearing. Use fans to create air flow. Drink cold water. Use hydration electrolytes, while sweating might not be cooling your, you will still sweat.
Shut the curtains on the South and West-facing side of the house.
A house which has been properly insulated can maintain a constant temperature throughout the year. External wall insulation and 300mm in the loft is the gold standard for habitat insulation.
Utilising heat for hot water makes a lot of sense.
Solar thermal systems can use heat to make hotwater but require mains power to operate the pumps & controller. Or you can set up an off-grid system.
Small-Scale Photovoltaics For Keeping Your Devices Up & Running
Charging mobile phones does not need a battery between the Photovoltaic and a USBC-D charcging module. The operating voltage is 6-60V, obviously check the current on the manufacturer's data and size your PV array accordingly.
Flooding
If you live in an area prone to flooding and can move, then move.
The alternative is to "tank" the house, put one-way valves in the sewer and pumps and sluices. And move upstairs. Keep tools which could aid you to break out of your loft onto the roof accessible in the loft. Include life jackets, snacks, sealed bottled water, and toilet paper. Yachting distress flares and orange smoke flares are also useful if you end up on the roof of your home during flooding. (Ensure you know how to operate them).
Brush Fires
In residential areas, brush fires could be catastrophic. If you are told to evacuate then leave. Vegetation close to buildings could spread a fire into a building. If you are not experienced in felling trees do not attempt it, even in an emergency, even if you have the equipment.
Avoid inhaling smoke either with an appropriate respirator or a wet cloth.
Coastal Erosion And Rising Sea Levels
As global terrestrial sea ice melts, sea levels rise, but not evenly. We have zero plans for adaptation to catastrophic sea level rise. Global supply chains will be impacted as ports cease to be able to function. Entire countries, counties and communities will be displaced creating an internal refugee crisis across every country with a coast.
Preparedness and Adaptation or Dystopian Survivalism
The notion of Dystopian Survivalism is not a term I would choose to use to describe what I do and what this blog and my other channels are about. It has been used as an insult by a famous podcaster to describe me and my blogging about strategies for Solidarity Prepping and they would like me to stop. Dystopian Survivalism has been compared to the National Emergency Briefing, but they didn't mention Wet-Bulb Temperatures, despite the deaths of 2 soldiers from heatstroke on the Brecon Beacons during a heatwave. The MOD uses Wet Bulb Tables to assess risk to soldiers on exercises and to ensure acclimatisation for deployment.
Solidarity Prepping
"Climate crisis, wars, inflation or the threat of blackouts – the challenges of our time are increasingly becoming a permanent burden, especially for those who are already marginalised. With the congress, we wanted to think about crisis prevention differently: collectively, fairly and inclusively – as a response that focuses on solidarity rather than isolation."
#soliprepping is antifascism in community action and mutual aid, this too is Transformative Adaptation.

Solidarity Preppong is community prepping. Soldiarity Prepping is about community preparedness and the importance of a connection with nature that goes beyond sitting under a tree.
